Bite Occlusion DentistryJust about anyone who has had dental care of one sort or another.... from routine general dentistry all the way to complex restorative and/or recontruction dentistry is familiar with the "average" way doctors assess bite characteristics.... the articulation (carbon) paper method.Basically the patient bites down on the paper (other types include waxes, pressure indicator paste, etc.) and carbon (or some other coloring agent) is deposited on the "high spots."
Most of these methods are not sensitive enough to detect simultaneous contact, and none measure both biting time and force. The dentist then makes adjustments as best as possible, as indicated by this occlusal assessment. The adjacent occlusal picture provides an example of this popular technique. Common Occlusal ComplaintsFar too many patients develop common and some not so common dental problems that can actually develop to such severe levels that more complex dentistry is often required (root canals, extractions, replacing brand new crowns, etc.)Dr. Marinic discovered that many of the conditions mentioned above came about through poor, inadequate or inaccurate occlusal analysis. His independent research for acquiring a more definitive diagnostic procedure led him to Tekscan, a company specializing in digital pressure sensoring equipment. Computerized Digital Accuracy versus Articulation Paper
Tekscan has a Dental Industry specific diagnostic device named T-Scan II that virtually eliminates the guess work and "trial and error" method of articulation paper based occlusal measurements. Our office adapted this amazing technology that enables our patients to have unsurpassed accuracy of bite and occlusal data that is critical... for even the most routine dental work. The assessment procedure is extremely efficient. No clumsy or messing articulation paper to deal with. The digital data provides a permanent record. Guesswork is eliminated. The 3-D representations are easy to comprehend and provides data that patients can easily understand, which can be critical in complex dentistry.
The example 3-D rendering provided here shows the high spots (yellowish-red) on each and every tooth that will need to be addressed during treatment. With articulation paper marks, there is no correlation between the depth of the color and the mark, its surface area, amount of force, or the contact timing sequence that results as that paper mark is made. The T-Scan II Occlusal Analysis system precisely determines the amount of force within a given paper mark. The software graphically displays both forceful and time premature contacts to the user for predictable occlusal control during adjustment procedure. The T-Scan II helps reduce the risk of:
Misconceptions in Non-Digital Occusal AnalysisMyth: When the patient states "it feels good, Dr." the bite is balancedFact: Patient perceptions are very poor indicators of occlusal balance Myth: The size of a paper mark indicates force content Fact: The size shows surface area only Myth: The color intensity of a paper mark indicates force content Fact: The color intensity has to do with the ability of the paper to ink up teeth Myth: A "scratch-like" paper mark is an artifact Fact: The scratches are very often times premature contacts Myth: When all teeth in one arch show paper marks, then all the teeth are hitting at the same time Fact:Paper gives an "endpoint stamp" of tooth contact order, which "looks like" the teeth all hit at the same time - actual contact sequence and contact simultaneity cannot be determined from paper Myth: Paper markings that are similar in shape and size are similar in force content Fact: No study has ever shown that similar markings contain similar forces Myth: Force and time can be "read" off paper markings Fact: It can't be done without the T-Scan! Definitive Bite Occlusion AnalysisDr. Marinic is available for a Complimentary Evaluation to assist patients in determining if certain occlusal problems currently exist for unusual dental complaints, as mentioned above.Digital occlusal analysis is routinely provided to all of our patients, assuring the best possible cosmetic and functional outcomes, regardless of the level of complexity in treatment plans.
